August 2011 Baby Shower

There were prizes and games, lunch was served, and photo sessions were available. Each mom left with essentials for their baby (go to our facebook page for more details) as well as a stroller, generously donated from Amanda Sabean and Kimberly Bochy of the Giants wives. What a fun celebration! HPP is so fortunate to have continually amazing donors who take our breath away with their bigheartedness.

Sam Jewett, Volunteer Extraordinaire!

At HPP, we are fortunate to have many longstanding and excellent volunteers. We are saying “see you soon!” to one young man, who has been with us since we moved to our space at 18th and Potrero.  As a young student, Sam Jewett knew he wanted to work with children.  While researching tutoring centers (he wanted to start his own), he was directed by a friend to HPP and has been a consistent companion of ours ever since. For the past 6 years, while attending Stuart Hall and then while on summer break from Vanderbilt, he has spent his summers at HPP.  Although he has volunteered, “in the basement, on the roof and everywhere in between,” his favorite place to be is the child care center. Jeannette and Helen are “hard-workers” (he refers to Jeannette as “Mom”) who quickly bonded with this optimistic fellow and have invited him gladly into their special space on the first floor.  In September, Sam will move on from HPP.  From his work here, he was inspired join the Peace Corps. He will be placed for a two and a half year stint in Northern Africa, as a Youth Development Leader.  Before he begins his service with the Peace corps, he will spend some time volunteering at Holy Cross Hospice in Botswana.  While meeting with Martha when he first began his time here, he found an “inspiration…who started a Peace Corps here (in San Francisco!)….She really drives the machine, but also gets people to follow her.”  Why does Sam come back to HPP again and again? “Because I genuinely care about the people.”   To him, the staff has “some of the coolest people in the world….Jeannette and Helen do not get enough credit for all of the dedication and hard work they put in.” What kind words from a kind young man.  We wish him luck on his adventures and can’t wait for him return to his HPP family!
